For 57 years, guests at the Washington State Fair have savored the sweet, smoky flavors of Murph’s BBQ. What started as a childhood passion for owner Greg Murphy—who began grilling at just 9-years-old—has since become a must-have Fair tradition. From his signature grilled corn to mouthwatering ribs and burgers, Murph’s BBQ is a staple that keeps fairgoers coming back year after year.
This long-standing partnership with the Washington State Fair Event Center dates back to the mid-1960s when Greg’s father, Rob Murphy, launched The Road Runner, a BBQ concession stand just outside the Red Gate. As demand grew, Murph’s BBQ eventually moved inside the fairgrounds, cementing its status as a guest favorite for generations.
But the Murphy family’s connection to the Fair runs even deeper. Around the same time that Rob Murphy fired up his first grill, another milestone was quietly unfolding—the Fair’s very first facility rental event. What began as a small gathering of car enthusiasts, casually known as The Model T Show, marked the venue’s first foray into hosting outside events. In those early days, the Fair didn’t have outside concessionaires, making this show a trailblazer in more ways than one. And who helped feed those first attendees? The Murphy family, of course.
Fast forward nearly 60 years, and history has come full circle. When the show’s original owner recently passed away, his wife was determined to not let the event dissolve. Looking for someone who would honor its legacy, she turned to the most personal buyer possible—Greg Murphy.
Now renamed the Early Bird Swap Meet, this beloved event continues to thrive, thanks to Murphy’s passion. Featuring a vast array of autos, boats, motorcycles, parts, projects, antiques, collectibles and sportswear, the swap meet keeps the nostalgia alive while welcoming new generations of enthusiasts. Military discounts are also offered, making it a can’t-miss tradition for gearheads and treasure hunters alike.
From barbecue to classic cars, the Murphy family’s legacy at the Fair is one of passion, tradition and community. As Murph’s BBQ continues to serve up Fair favorites and the Early Bird Swap Meet carries on its decades-long history, one thing is certain—some traditions are just too good to let go.
Big changes are underway at the Gold Gate, and we’re thrilled to share the latest updates on this exciting transformation! As one of the main entrances to our venue, this renovation is all about creating a welcoming, year-round entrance that’s as functional as it is visually stunning.
The centerpiece of this upgrade? A brand-new interactive water feature that’s just beginning to be installed. This eye-catching element will offer guests a refreshing experience, adding a sense of wonder and delight as they enter.
But that’s just the start. The new signature “W” structure will stand proudly outside the gates, making a bold statement that celebrates our iconic venue. The surrounding area will feature personalized pavers (benefitting the Washington State Fair Foundation)—a chance for you to leave your mark with custom messages that will be part of this special space for years to come.
Overhead, a high canopy with programmable lighting will add a whole new level of energy and fun. Picture vibrant lights and seasonal themes illuminating the space, creating an inviting atmosphere for daytime visits and evening events alike.
And if you’ve noticed things looking a little more open, you’re right! The new design will feature a spacious, open layout that flows naturally from the street through the gates, making the entrance feel more welcoming and accessible for everyone.
Stay tuned as we continue to bring this vision to life.
